Reflecting on the Messes
“Healthy striving is self-focused: How can I improve?
Perfectionism is other-focused: What will they think?”
– Brene Brown
When you first started your mindfulness practice, you might have had a preconceived idea of what that looked like. The trend of #mindfulliving has certainly gotten popular on TikTok and Instagram, so you might even have expectations about what your practice “should” look like.
For many of us, clinging to old ideas (or toxic beliefs) is a kind of perfectionism. I know I can be determined to carry out a task or perform with no mistakes. Even though I’m working on not being a perfectionist, that determination has often helped me get through some challenging situations.
But perfectionism means being laser-focused on the finish line, which can be a distraction from the path toward our true selves.
I’ll check in on you this week! Feel free to share in the Slack group about any of your insights!
