Overcoming Abuse Challenge – Day 2
Reclaiming Your Reality: Strategies to Counter Gaslighting
Let’s take the next step on this journey of self-discovery and healing.
Gaslighting is a common and insidious tactic used by narcissists to distort your perception of reality, making you doubt your own thoughts, feelings, and experiences. It can leave you feeling confused, anxious, and powerless. However, by learning to recognize and counter gaslighting, you can begin to reclaim your truth and break free from the narcissist’s manipulative grip.
You are not responsible for the narcissist’s abusive behavior.
Gaslighting is a reflection of the narcissistic’s own dysfunction and insecurity, not your worth or sanity.
Here are some strategies to counter gaslighting that you can explore and incorporate into your healing journey:
- Keep a journal to document incidents of gaslighting and your true thoughts and feelings.
- Seek validation from trusted friends, family, or a therapist who can support your reality.
- Practice self-affirmations that reinforce your perceptions and self-trust, such as “My feelings are valid” or “I believe in myself.”
- Set firm boundaries with the narcissist and limit your engagement when they attempt to gaslight you.
- Educate yourself on narcissistic abuse and gaslighting tactics to help you identify and resist manipulation.
Healing is a gradual process, and every step counts. Be patient and compassionate with yourself as you work to reclaim your reality and break free from the narcissist’s control.
